Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain—remember him!—came to Washington this week to mark tomorrow’s federal income tax filing deadline, and he tried to bring his friends with him.
Last time we checked in on Cain, he was running a YouTube video featuring the catapulting and shooting death of a defenseless bunny. Today, he’s here for “Cain’s Revolution on the Hill,” a well-timed objection to an admittedly confounding federal tax code that Cain advocated replacing with his “9-9-9” plan. But from the looks of the photo above, it looks like the revolution was more of a minor skirmish.
Too bad for Cain, considering he came loaded to bear, Slate’s David Weigel writes:
Signing up for Herman Cain’s “Revolution on the Hill” was easy. There were ads at the top of plenty of conservative news sites. The registration for three events—a Sunday reception, Monday morning seminar, and Monday afternoon rally—was free, and included a boxed lunch. Cainiacs had a full hour to get between the Virginia hotel where the seminar would be held and the Capitol lawn where they’d listen to speeches and music. Six free buses were available to move them.
The turnout, Weigel continues, has been a tremendous disappointment for people who expected Cain to draw thousands of anti-tax Tea Partiers, libertarians and other like-minded activists to Congress’ doorstep on the eve of the filing deadline. Oh, well. At least it’s gorgeous out today. And if the Cain supporters are so interested in liberty, they should stick around and celebrate with us. It is Emancipation Day, after all.
