A screenshot of the UGNazi hacker group’s website. The hackers responsible for yesterday’s cyberattack on D.C. government servers and websites weren’t kidding when they said they were only getting started.
After most D.C. government websites came back online in the early afternoon after being felled by a denial of service attack, hackers affiliated with the UGNazi group again took aim at a number of sites after 5 p.m., briefly bringing down DC.gov and Washington.org, the city’s main tourism site. Later in the evening, they posted information about Mayor Vince Gray online, including his phone numbers, address, children, and what they claim to be his Social Security number.
Yesterday a hacker going by the name Cosmo told us that the group was attacking various websites—including NYC.gov and Military.com—because of “the way the government treats the internet.” Softpedia reported that the hackers had similarly attacked the NASDAQ website this morning, briefly bringing it down.
This isn’t the first time the group has posted sensitive information about public figures. Earlier this week, they posted similar information about Newt Gingrich, including what seems to be his Social Security number. In January, they published the same information about Dana White, the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. That move came in response to UFC’s support of the Stop Online Piracy Act, a law that provoked widespread opposition and controversy earlier this year. They also posted info on Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey and actor Neil Patrick Harris.
When asked why the group would post information on Gray, Cosmo responded: “Due to him not even caring that his city’s site is down, hes still drinking his wine and stealing the peoples money.”
