As we reported last week, a new slate of higher fares for D.C. taxicabs went into effect over the weekend, pushing what you pay for a ride from $1.50 to $2.16 per mile.

At least on paper, at least—all D.C. cabs have to get their meters re-calibrated for the new fares, and the D.C. Taxicab Commission has given them until May 31 to do so. (Some cabbies are reportedly weighing legal action to stop the fare increase, mostly because it scraps many surcharges.)

So how do you know that your cab is charging the new or old rates? According to the D.C. Taxicab Commission, just look for the red-circled sticker below for cabs charging new rates. Cabs still charging the old rates have a similar sticker, though it’s blue.
