After the Washington Capitals’ overtime win on Wednesday night, the team had the chance to relish the victory and relax until their next opponent could emerge. Now one has.

With their victory 2-1 over the Ottawa Senators yesterday, the New York Rangers advanced in the playoffs and will face the Caps starting Saturday at 3 p.m. in New York. After that, Game 2 will be Monday in New York, and games 3 and 4 will take place in Washington on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.

Writes Comcast SportsNet on the coming series:

The Capitals and Rangers will be facing each other in the playoffs for the third time in the past four years. The Caps rallied to beat the Rangers in the first round of the 2009 playoffs, then took them down in five games in the first round last spring.

“We have a real appreciation for their team,” Capitals center Brooks Laich said. “Last year, even though the series was 4-1, I thought it was a lot closer than that. This year, they have Ryan Callahan healthy and they’ve added Brad Richards.

Needless to say, we can only hope that the Caps hand the Rangers repeated defeats the way D.C. United bested the New York Red Bulls last weekend. Victories are sooooo much better in D.C., after all.
