Cinco de Mayo, while not the most important holiday in Mexico (that’d be Independence Day on September 16), is still, for many, a day to commemorate General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

For others marking the day, especially in the United States, Cinco de Mayo is an excuse to stay out late drinking. Plenty of bars and restaurants around town are offering holiday specials—think discounted Coronas and margaritas.

But as with all booze-fueled festivities, tomorrow many will likely need a way home that does not involve getting behind the wheel of a car. To that end, Crown Imports, the U.S. distributor for several leading Mexican beers including Corona and Negra Modelo, will be passing out free Metrorail fare cards at various bars and restaurants all afternoon and evening. The cards are good for a single ride, according to a press release.

Much like the free cab rides made available to sozzled revelers on St. Patrick’s Day, passing out free Metrorail rides seems like a good idea for tomorrow’s crapulous set. Crown’s representatives are moving through D.C. tomorrow, starting at the Tortilla Coast restaurant on P Street NW at 1 p.m., then making their way across town. And even if you miss the free Metro cards, please, have fun celebrating a Mexican military victory and get home safely.
