A widened sidewalk in front of Tryst in Adams Morgan.

It’s been over a year since construction crews took to destroying sidewalks and roadway surfaces along 18th Street in the heart of Adams Morgan, but the improvements that are part their soon-to-be-completed work have become more evident in recent weeks.

Repaving of the road is coming to an end, 71 new artistic bike racks were installed yesterday and new globe lighting will soon grace the nightlife corridor.

Probably most obvious a change are the new sidewalks—with an added four to seven feet of space depending on location, the weekend’s wandering drunks won’t be forced out on to the street and will be able stumble more safely from bar to bar. (Don’t get to excited, though—work is still taking place on sidewalks on the west side of 18th Street.)

Like many of the streetscape projects in D.C., the wholesale 15-month-long reconstruction project in Adams Morgan attracted plenty of complaints, both from residents and businesses that were affected by the daily work. Some business owners worry that even with construction coming to an end, things won’t be the same as they were before. (The Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District is hoping that some new branding will change that.)

The $6.5 million project is scheduled for completion within six weeks.
