Seems like E.L. James has Northern Virginia readers wrapped around her finger, according to figures released yesterday by Amazon Inc. The online retailer announced yesterday that Alexandria tops the list of “most well-read” U.S. cities as measured by book, magazine and e-book sales.

The list, Amazon’s second annual ranking of Americans’ literary habits, reflects pretty well on the D.C. area. Arlington is ranked seventh, and the District itself came in ninth.

Granted, this is just a list based on Amazon’s sales numbers, but some of the genre breakdowns are pretty fascinating. Berkley, Calif. (No. 3 overall) lead all cities in the number of travel books consumed; Cambridge, Mass. (No. 2) was tops for business books.

So what genre did Alexandria lead in?

Romance novels. Those cheap thrills are surging in popularity just in time for beach season. It’s actually not too surprising, considering the dominance James’ Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has on Amazon’s (and other companies’) bestseller lists. James’ lurid series of bondage and discipline is still perched atop Amazon’s list of top-selling books with no letting up in sight.

And it seems like readers in Alexandria are lapping them right up.
