Last Sunday, throngs of people flooded into Dupont Circle to shimmy on the dance floor. Why? We’re not really sure, other than to take part in “Dance in the Circle,” a promotional event for dance companies from around Washington.
The event, which was postponed from its original April 21, started with performances by dance troupes including Hoop Dance DC, Urban Artistry and Urban Impact (Joy of Motion). Organizers laid down a parquet floor over the circle’s concrete.
And following the professional sets, Dance in the Circle transformed into a free-for-all of twisting and grinding in the middle of a busy neighborhood. Not surprisingly, this was organized by the same outfit that put together the “Official Dupont Circle Snowball Fight” in February 2010. No word if the dance party also doubled as a competition pitting the moves of those who live north of the circle against those who live south of it.
