For the second consecutive year, the Maryland Terrapins men’s lacrosse team is going to the NCAA Final Four. The Terps, who are the only remaining unseeded team in the tournament, knocked off No. 2 seed and fellow state rival Johns Hopkins 11-5 last Saturday in Annapolis.

The quarterfinal matchup was a rematch of last month’s bout, where Maryland (11-5) upset the third-ranked Blue Jays (12-4) at Homewood Stadium in Baltimore in a 9-6 victory. In first round action of the NCAA Tournament, Maryland edged past No. 7 seed Lehigh when senior Joe Cummings scored a goal with six seconds left in regulation, giving the Terps a one point victory.

Meanwhile, Johns Hopkins made easy work of Stony Brook in a 19-9 thrashing. The stage was then set for a rematch involving one of the most historic rivalries in all of college lacrosse (the two schools have been playing each other since 1892), and with the game being held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in nearby Annapolis, a capacity crowd was on-hand for Saturday’s action.

Maryland controlled possession throughout the majority of the game while Hopkins appeared disjointed and couldn’t get into an offensive rhythm. The Terps won not only the faceoff battle (12 of 20) but also collected 11 more ground balls than the Blue Jays. Senior midfielder Drew Snider led Maryland in scoring with three goals, with fellow midfielders Mike Chanenchuk and John Haus each netting a pair of their own.

It was the first time since 1973 that Maryland has defeated Johns Hopkins twice in one season, and will now move on to face conference rival No. 3 Duke in their third meeting this season in the NCAA semifinals. The two ACC schools have split the series, with Maryland winning during the regular season and Duke beating the Terps in the ACC tournament semifinals. The teams will face-off at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts at 5 p.m. this coming Saturday. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
