For 7-Eleven convenience stores in Washington, Free Slurpee Day came and went pleasantly enough. If there were any angry incidents to be had, most likely they came in dentists’ offices after people walked in with teeth coated in sticky, slimy ice granules.
But in one Baltimore 7-Eleven, things quickly went to hell as a mob of grabby kids swarmed the Slurpee machine and overwhelmed the staff, CBS Baltimore reports. Nearly as soon as the shop started doling out the 7.11-ounce complimentary refreshers, between 35 and 40 youths rushed in and turned what was supposed to be a friendly promotional event into a complete shitshow:
“It was a lot of kids and they were out of control,” Kesha Chester, who was at the store at the time, said.
While some kids lined up for the free Slurpee, witnesses saw other kids raiding the candy shelves.
“They went in, they started going everywhere in the store, grabbing things and then they just run out. And I knew that they didn’t buy it because they just run out,” Kendra Mellerson said. “They ran that way and they ran that way. And the guy was trying to come out and stop them but they couldn’t because there was so many.”
It didn’t stop there. A store manager tried to prevent the horde of unruly kids from leaving with their stolen wares. But perhaps fueled by their Slurpee-induced sugar highs, they proceeded to punch the manager until he relented. The whole crazy scene was caught by the store’s security camera, though 7-Eleven and Baltimore Police are refusing to release the clip.
Here’s CBS Baltimore’s report:
Next time we say Slurpees are the worst, don’t doubt us.
