As Chuck Brown is laid to rest today, official tributes to the Godfather of Go-Go are starting to come into focus.
Yesterday D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives seeking to designate August 22—Brown’s birthday—as “Chuck Brown Day.” Fans of Brown had petitioned for such a move shortly after his death.
“Chuck Brown’s funky go-go beat gave hometown D.C. its own distinctive sound, and helped the world see that the District is more than just a government town. He was truly one of us—he played a concert in the hot summer sun at the Capitol a few years ago to support our fight for statehood and voting rights,” Norton said in a statement. “Chuck gave the District and the nation the gift of go-go, whose lasting beat spans generations.”
D.C. flags will fly at half-staff today for Brown’s funeral, which is set to take place at the Washington Convention Center at noon.
