Photo by RolenzThe streetscape work in Adams Morgan is close to being done, but nightlife enthusiasts in D.C. will only have a short break—upgrades to a 0.4-mile stretch of U Street are next on the list.
On June 11, the D.C. Department of Transportation will start streetscape upgrades on U Street from 14th to Ninth streets NW, improving the roadway surface, sidewalks, streelights, Metro bus pads, and traffic signals. The Lincoln Theatre is also slated to get special decorative sidewalks. The work is expected to run through spring 2013, and will start at Ninth Street and proceed west.
Businesses have expressed concerns over the impact the work will have on their clientele, but city officials have set aside a fund for businesses that are threatened by the construction. (Similar funds have helped businesses on H Street NE and 18th Street NW.)
Last year U Street was included on the American Planning Association’s Great Places in America list, alongside L.A.’s Santa Monica Boulevard, St. Louis’ Washington Avenue and Alexandria’s King Street.
