Arlington is expanding its number of Capital Bikeshare stations and both Montgomery and Prince George’s County are getting in on the bike-sharing action, so it’s little surprise that parts of Fairfax County may soon be following suit. The Examiner reports that Reston and Tysons Corner might be the first parts of the county to experiment with bike-sharing:

Officials say plans for bike sharing are still just being discussed and they aren’t sure if a Reston pilot would be plugged into the Capital Bikeshare brand already popular in the District and Arlington. But they said they hope some form of bike system will be in place in time for the opening of Metro’s Silver Line at Reston, slated for early 2014.

“The county definitely does want bike sharing,” said county spokeswoman Beth Francis. “We don’t have funding right now, but it’s definitely in the plans.”

Regardless, even some cyclist advocates are doubtful that bike-sharing can work in such suburban outposts. Capital Bikeshare’s arrival to parts of Montgomery County has been premised on improvements in cycling infrastructure, so similar advances would likely have to come to Reston and Tysons Corner to me bike-sharing workable.
