They’re part of any urban landscape—the abandoned carcasses of once-used bicycles, often stripped of parts and left locked to bike racks for passersby to sadly shake their heads at. And once they’re there, abandoned bikes don’t often move. While the D.C. Department of Transportation can remove a bicycle if it has remained in one location for more than 30 days, the process can often take a lot longer than that.

WAMU has teamed up with Transportation Nation to map all of the abandoned bicycles in D.C., and they need your help. If you happen upon a sad bicycle that’s missing some parts and doesn’t look like it’ll be recovered anytime soon, email a picture to bikes (at) wamu (dot) org and they’ll add it to their map.
