Once in a while, America’s leading gasbag, Rush Limbaugh, likes to wade into D.C.’s local politics. Why? Who knows? It’s not like he gets it right. It was only a few months ago when he barged in to defend Virginia Attorney General Ken “The Cooch” Cuccinelli’s rat paranoia by dismissing Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) as “this Mary Cheh babe.”
The latest evidence: On his radio program today, Limbaugh caught wind of the illicit “shadow” campaign that was waged in 2010 on behalf of Mayor Vince Gray, who is currently warding off suspicion that he played an active role in the scheme. That Gray has not been accused of any personal wrongdoing, though, does not matter to Rush.
Limbaugh, predictably, is one of those blowhards who assumes that Gray is guilty simply because he is the mayor of the District of Columbia. It’s partially a Marion Barry thing—it’s tough to find a national report about local D.C. politics that does not mention Barry’s January 1990 in a crack cocaine sting operation—and in today’s instance, Limbaugh was egged on in party by a report about Gray last night on CNN.
In the clip embedded below, Limbaugh riffs on D.C.’s history of ethically troubled mayors, and comes to what he believes is an ingenious conclusion as to why all D.C. mayors are bathed in corruption—because they’re Democrats!
Er, OK, whatever Rush. Because it’s not like a Republican mayor has ever been charged with campaign fraud or some other crime. Or a Republican governor. Or maybe even Republican members of Congress! Or a president?
Also, if we could offer Rush a pro tip for the next time he weighs in on our provincial affairs: The CNN story he referenced featured an interview with Mark Plotkin, former WTOP analyst and now a political pundit about town. Plotkin, despite Limbaugh’s insistence, is not to be confused with Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Gah, whatever. Just listen to Rush being a dummy if you can stomach it:
