President Obama will travel to Aurora, Colo. today to visit with the families of the victims of Friday’s shooting massacre at a movie theater there. He will also meet with local officials before heading to San Francisco later this evening.
The president’s visit comes a little more than 48 hours after a gunman detonated a smoke grenade and opened fire with an assault rifle and other firearms in a packed movie theater where patrons were taking in a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, the newest Batman film.
Police in Aurora arrested James Holmes, a 24-year-old neuroscience student at the University of Colorado, whose apartment was later found to be booby-trapped with explosive devices.
In his weekly address, Obama focused on the victims of the Colorado shooting, echoing sentiments he made the day before in the hours after the carnage.
“Even as we come to learn how this happened and who’s responsible, we may never understand what leads anyone to terrorize their fellow human beings,” Obama said. “Such evil is senseless—beyond reason.”
Obama also ordered Friday that all U.S. flags at federal buildings, military installations and diplomatic posts be flown at half-staff through Wednesday.
