He also spent many years with jazz organist Jimmy McGriff, and tonight, he will re-visit that classic Hammond B-3 sound at Blues Alley. >> Twins Jazz hosts a group of talented collegiate musicians tonight under the lead of saxophonist Jacob Garbus. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> We interviewed drummer and NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Cobb, the sole surviving musicians from the legendary Kind of Blue sessions, when he came to town earlier this year. Cobb will return to the District on Thursday to kick off a four night stand of 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley, during which he will pay tribute to the soulful organ/guitar sounds of Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery. Heavyweights Larry Coryell and Joey DeFrancesco will join Cobb for the full run. $35 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Vocalist Danielle Wertz is just 17-years old and still in high school, but has already started performing in area clubs. She will be at Twins Jazz on Thursday for 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> The Wailin’ Mailman, local legend Buck Hill, is still going strong on the saxophone at 85-years old. If you haven’t seen Hill yet, you are missing out on one of the true icons of D.C.’s jazz scene. Catch him lead a band on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> Pianist Larry Willis has appeared on over 300 recordings during a career that spans 50 years. He has been a sideman with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey and Woody Shaw, and has recorded a number of albums as a leader. Willis will lead a group on Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. 8:30 and 10:30 sets. $22.

>> A D.C. native, guitarist Paul Pieper has been performing regularly in area venues for years. After placing second in the 1995 Monk Competition, his career has taken him around the world. Pieper will lead a band this Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. $15 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> HR-57 hosts regulars Antonio Parker (Friday) and Cheney Thomas (Saturday). 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $15.

>> Blue Monday Blues hosts vocalist Shirletta Settles and her band. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> Busy area saxophonist Bobby Muncy concludes his month long, Sunday night residency at Twins Jazz with his eclectic fusion group, Kung Fu Bastard. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10.

>> On Monday, Doc Scantlin & Imperial Palmetto visit Blues Alley to revisit the classic big band sounds that were popular from the roaring ’20s through World War II. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $20 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Ace bassist Tarus Mateen concludes his month long Artist-in-Residence at Bohemian Caverns on Tuesday. 7 and 9 p.m. sets. $10.
