Photo by erin mNot sure how we missed this one on Monday, but in a tweet earlier this week Mayor Vince Gray said that his support of LGBT rights and same-sex marriage was longstanding and that President Obama “finally caught up.”
Gray was responding in part to last week’s announcement that he opposed Chick-fil-A over it stance on same-sex marriage, though he also admitted that there wasn’t much he could do to stop it from coming to D.C. A Twitter user asked him if he had only come to support same-sex marriage because President Obama has, prompting his response.
Gray also corrected another user who said that D.C. was “85% black” and that “95% of blacks are against Gay marriage.” Not so, tweeted Gray, who said that roughly 50 percent of the city is black and that a slight majority favored same-sex marriage.

@hillcountrytxn I have been a strong supporter of marriage equality & other LGBT rights for years. The President finally caught up.— Vincent C. Gray (@mayorvincegray) July 31, 2012

@pat9595 Actually, Census Bureau stats show DC at 50% black, and recent polls show slight black majority in favor of marriage equality.— Vincent C. Gray (@mayorvincegray) August 1, 2012
