As the Olympic Games continued into their second week, attention shifted from the pool to the track. With the swimming program over, track and field events are the main attraction now, and over the weekend, the world’s finest sprinters raced to determine the fastest man and woman on Earth.
In a repeat of their 2008 performances, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce took gold in the men’s and women’s 100-meter dashes over the weekend in London. But the United States didn’t come away empty-handed. Carmelita Jeter won the silver medal in the women’s race with a time of 10.78 seconds, while Justin Gatlin nabbed the bronze in the men’s with a time of 9.79 seconds.
But that’s not all Team USA came away with. As we reported last week, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo announced that its recently debuted cheetah cubs would be named after the fastest U.S. performers in the 100-meter sprint.
To that end, the zoo announced today, the female cub will be named Carmelita, while the male will be called Justin.
Not exactly a gold medal, but having a cheetah cub named after you is pretty swell.
