Two planes on the tarmac at Dulles International Airport had a brief but jarring run-in this afternoon when they lightly collided with each other. About 2:15 p.m., a Lufthansa transatlantic jet and a United Express commuter plane made contact on the taxiway near the airport’s “A” terminal, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said.

Lufthansa flight 417, an Airbus A330 bound for Frankfurt, Germany, was pulling away as United Express 3912 was making its way toward its arrival gate. The Airbus’ right wing tip and the commuter jet’s tail scraped each other, causing exterior damage to each part and sending both planes back to to the terminal. No one on either aircraft was injured, Rob Yingling, the airport spokesman, told DCist.

The Lufthansa flight was carrying 183 passengers, said Christina Semmel, a spokeswoman for the airline. Semmel said she did not yet know if the passengers would be rebooked on later flights or if the A330 would be repaired and put back in service.
