This is tragic: the two girls killed by the 80-car CSX train that derailed overnight in Ellicott City, Maryland tweeted from the bridge where the incident occurred that took their lives.

“Drinking on top of the Ellicott City sign with @r0se_petals,” tweeted 19-year-old Elizabeth Conway Nass, referring to Rose Louese Mayr, also 19, by her Twitter username. Mayr posted a picture of their feet dangling from the bridge spanning Main Street in Ellicott City, where the derailment occurred. The two were crushed by coal that came falling out of cars that overturned.

Nass was a student at James Madison University, while Mayr studied at the University Delaware. Just as they used Twitter to tell their friends what they were doing, friends of the two tweeted message of sadness and condolence after hearing the news.

The Baltimore Sun has more details on the incident and investigation into its cause:

The accident happened at approximately 12:02 a.m. and involved two locomotives totalling 3,000 feet long, traveling at 25 miles per hour, said Southworth. Seven of the 21 derailed cars derailed onto the parking lot. Southworth said the priority is to get the lot cleared.

The NTSB is currently investigating signals, communication, conditions of the track, conditions of the bridge and equipment. They are also determining if 25 miles per hour was the correct speed for that stretch of track, said Southworth. A track expert is flying in today from Chicago.
