Four people in a line for free groceries in Columbia Heights were injured earlier today when an errant sport utility vehicle struck them. Police said the collision happened about 11:30 a.m. in a parking lot behind the 2900 block of 14th Street NW when the car veered into the queue for a weekly food pantry that distributes fresh produce to nearby residents.

None of the injuries sustained by the four victims are life-threatening, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department said.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, and the driver has not been cited for anything yet, police said. The SUV was still lodged on the curb at the end of Harvard Court, an alleyway that juts off Columbia Road.

People who were waiting to pick up fresh produce said they heard screaming and yelling right before the collision. “Heard a bang, heard people hollering,” said Jack Walden.

Another witness, Joyce Mobley, told DCist one of the victims is a close friend who is “seriously hurt.”

Police have shut down Columbia Road between 14th and 15th streets NW and are rerouting westbound traffic, including the Circulator bus route that normally turns from 14th onto Columbia. Metro is also advising that the 52, 53 and 54 routes might be delayed as they pass the scene.
