He’s long been known as the “mayor-for-life.” In June, he added a title: Ward 8’s “Commander-in-Chief.” And now Councilmember Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) designated himself a “jobs czar.”
In a press release sent out today by Barry’s office—which referred to him as the mayor-for-life in the title and text—the Ward 8 legislator gave himself credit for getting his constituents jobs:
“I am a jobs czar,” said Councilmember Barry. “Jobs and career development have been a top priority for me over the years, as well as ensuring opportunities for minority-owned businesses. I don’t just talk about the lack of jobs, I specialize in presenting results. I’ve successfully secured a record commitment on jobs and opportunities for Black and Hispanic-owned businesses by using my legislative right to place holds on contracts—which is unprecedented. I have urged the Mayor repeatedly to include provisions for jobs and opportunities for District residents in the contracts submitted to the Council to no avail. It’s my priority to get District residents working, as well as giving opportunities to Black and Hispanic-owned businesses. This should be the top priority for the Mayor and the administration as well. This method has proven successful, and I will continue to use this method as often as necessary to get District residents employed in careers with upward mobility.”
In totally unrelated news, unemployment in Ward 8 stands at 22.5 percent. From 2005 to 2009, it averaged 18.6 percent. By comparison, today D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton hosted a job fair for D.C. residents with 85 employers. For his part, Mayor Vince Gray said today that his administration has created 3,747 jobs since September 2011.
