Had an earthquake struck D.C. in 2001 or 1991, most of our recollections would be shared as stories. But given that it hit in 2011—when D.C. was covered by security cameras and just about everyone has at least one gadget that could record video—we got plenty of live footage of the August 23 5.8-magnitude temblor as it hit.
None of the videos are particularly noteworthy—this was a minor shake, all told. But they say plenty about how the area—which isn’t known for earthquakes—responded when the ground started moving. Below is a small sampling of some of our favorite YouTube videos from that day.
