Photo by Amber WilkieThe summer’s coming to a close, and that means that the city’s public pools have slowly been closing their doors.
Over the last three weekends, 14 pools across the city have closed, and eight remaining will stay open through Labor Day weekend. They are: Banneker (2500 Georgia Avenue NW) in Ward 1; Francis (25th & N Street NW), Jelleff (3265 S Street NW) and Volta Park (1555 34th Street NW) in Ward 2, Upshur (4300 Arkansas Avenue NW) in Ward 4; Rosedale (1701 Gales Street NE) in Ward 6; Fort Dupont (830 Ridge Road SE); and Fort Stanton (1800 Erie Street SE) in Ward 8. The East Potomac Pool will remain open until October 6.
And while humans are losing out, dogs are winning. Late last week the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation announced the annual Fourth Annual Doggie Day Swim, when canine companions are allowed to take a plunge into select pools. This year’s swim will take place on September 8 from noon to 4 p.m. at Upshur and Francis pools, and it’s free for D.C. residents. Alexandria is hosting the same event on the same day from 3-7 p.m. at the Old Town Pool (1609 Cameron Street).
Sadly, the Washington Humane Society doesn’t seem to be repeating last year’s fundraising doggie dip at the Washington Hilton, but it is hosting a “Pups in the Park” event on September 22 at Nationals Park, where your dog gets an outfield seat for $8.
