The first day of the new year at Perry Hall High School in Baltimore County, Md. was upended when a 17-year-old student was shot in the middle of the cafeteria, leaving him in critical condition. One suspect, who we’re told is 15 years old, has been taken into custody.
The shooting occurred about 10:45 a.m. when the gunman opened fire, hitting the victim in the back, police said. The victim was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, while the school’s 2,300 students were evacuated to a nearby shopping center, The Baltimore Sun reports.
WJZ, the CBS affiliate in Baltimore, reports that the shooter was tackled to the ground by teachers who were in the cafeteria at the time. It was a frightful scene, especially for those students entering a public school for the first time in their lives:
One student told WJZ’s Hellgren it was his [first] day of public school and he saw the shooting. He says there was a lot of blood and saw the student shot in the back. There are estimates there were about 200 students in the cafeteria at the time of the shooting.
Others told WJZ they heard a scuffle before the shooting. After the shooting, the school was put on lockdown for almost an hour.
“It sounded like a fight against the locker with all the banging. I heard screaming and the teachers told everybody to stay calm… it was crazy,” said Justin Spencer, tenth-grader. “When all the teachers started running to the classrooms and locking the doors and then on the speaker we heard the teachers saying lockdown, lockdown, this is not a drill we need everyone to stay in the classrooms.”
WJZ also reports that the shooting might have been preceded by a Facebook threat. Some students’ parents told the television station about a message that warned “First day of school, last day of life.”
A Baltimore County Police spokeswoman did not have any information about the suspect or the type of weapon used in the shooting.
