>> George Steinmetz spent 15 years documenting the world’s deserts from above; as he flew over them in his very own motorized paraglider. That’s right—he flew over the deserts with a jetpack and photographed them. And, they are amazing. Experience Desert Air at National Geographic Museum’s free M St. gallery starting Thursday.
>> artdc gallery focuses on metal as the third installment of a series exploring materials. This sculpture show features a solid representation of the area’s metal artists, many of whom are members of the Washington Sculptor’s Group, and their delicate and heavy 2- and 3-dimensional works that defy gravity and represent the versatility of the medium. artdc has Gravity opens Saturday with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m.
>> For seven hours on Saturday, artist Caroling Mayorga will clean the inside of the glass structure surrounding the Performance Bridge at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. It has to be done, though this type of work is usually completed in off hours, not during a busy holiday weekend at the Museum. But, that’s the point – Mayorga’s performance brings this normally hidden work into public view, while opening a dialogue on stereotypes commonly associated with Latin American immigrants. Maid in the USA will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday is also your last chance to take advantage of the Museum’s Free Summer Saturdays program.
>> The free weekend filmfest at the National Gallery of Art includes Italian master filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni’s La Notte at 2:30 p.m. Saturday followed by L’Eclisse, considered his most impressionistic work, at 2 p.m. Sunday. Also on Sunday, Russian filmmaker Aleksei Guerman’s Khrustalyov, My Car!, set in a bleak Moscow in the winter of 1953, screens at 4:30 p.m.. On Monday, catch Antonioni’s Red Desert, preceded by Noto, Mandorli, Vulcano, Stromboli, Carnevale, a compilation of unstructured footage of lowers in bloom, overhead views of a volcano, and a party in progress, at 2:30 p.m. All films are free and are screened in the Gallery’s East Building Auditorium and seating is on first-come, first-seated basis.
