Capital Bikeshare already has a considerable presence in Arlington, though its 60 stations are mostly clustered around Pentagon City, Clarendon and Virginia Square, leaving a wide swath of the satellite city cut off from the communal transportation service.

But the underserved parts of Arlington might not have to go that much longer without easy access to the heavy, red street cruisers, judging by the map of proposed stations Bikeshare posted to its planning map yesterday. In 2013, Arlington officials would like to see Bikeshare extend into sections like Long Branch Creek, Fairlington and Columbia Heights (yeah, they’ve got one of those, too.)

Not all 39 proposed locations will wind up playing home to a Bikeshare dock, but the proposed expansion’s saturation areas are clear. BikeArlington, the county office that manages Arlington’s section of the service, envisions a string of Bikeshare stations along Columbia Pike, the artery that cuts through central Arlington, nearly reaching the Fairfax County border at Bailey’s Crossroads.

The other main area of focus is South Glebe Road, where Arlington seeks to add stations as the street winds from Arlington Boulevard, past Interstate 395 and ending just short of Reagan Washington National Airport.

The WashCycle blog mostly approved of the proposed expansion locations, save the continued lack of a Bikeshare dock right at the airport. “I suppose you can walk from Crystal City,” the blog posits.

BikeArlington is planning a series of community meetings on the proposed new stations throughout the fall.
