Gone are the days of not having enough fare on your SmarTrip card but knowing full well that you could go into the red. As of yesterday, WTOP writes, Metro users will need to have a minimum fare of $1.20 on their SmarTrip card to get into the system. (Seniors and disabled riders will only need 35 cents.)

Metro is also knocking down the price of the card to encourage its use; a new card will set you back $5, but a $3 rebate is available. Additionally, if you register your SmarTrip card, you can add money online.

By November, Metro says, it plans on having SmarTrip vending machines in the system’s 86 stations; currently, they’re in 47 stations.
