Party monster. Not pictured: A rager. (Photo by Carl Malamud)A lot of Redskins fans might remember where they were when the team announced that it had traded a handful of future picks in exchange for the second slot in this year’s NFL Draft. At home or in bars, Redskins fans jumped in glee when they learned that Baylor University’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III would be coming to Washington.
So far, it’s worked out pretty well, what with Griffin being lauded as the NFC Offensive Player of the Week and landing on the cover of Sports Illustrated after his first professional outing.
But what about the guys who pulled off the blockbuster deal that brought Griffin here? How did they celebrate?
In classic rich-guy fashion, it turns out. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that after pulling off the Griffin trade, Redskins owner Dan Snyder, General Manager Bruce Allen and Head Coach Mike Shanahan boarded Snyder’ private jet and set course for the Bahamas, where, apparently they partied it up for a booze-soaked, golf-filled weekend.
It’s not the first time Snyder mixed partying and private air travel. Via Sports Bog, we are reminded of when the Redskins landed Shanahan:
On the way to missing the playoffs for the eighth time in his 11 seasons as Redskins owner, Snyder retreated to the pilot’s lounge inside the hangar with two of his closest advisers at the time, Dave Donovan, the team’s chief operating officer, and Karl Swanson, Snyder’s senior vice president of public relations. Vinny Cerrato, the executive vice president of personnel and Snyder’s right-hand man, joined them after he had taken the team plane home with the players and their beleaguered coach, Jim Zorn.
While watching NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” game between the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts, the four men drank glasses of Sassicaia, a bold Tuscan red that is a Snyder favorite, those who were present said. They added that Snyder eventually graduated to Crown Royal.
Finally, Snyder turned to the others. “Let’s go get Mike Shanahan,” he said.
Dan Snyder: He may make Redskins fans very cranky, but at least he knows how to party.
