As we reported earlier this afternoon, zoo officials only became aware that Mei Xiang had given birth as they watched the Panda Cam, which is open for anyone with an Internet connection to see. To most of us, what ended up being a panda birth may not look like much—Mei Xiang looks to be moving around, but there’s little visual evidence of the pitter-patter of panda paws. Zoo officials say they knew that a birth had taken place when they heard the distinctive squawking of the panda cub. Below is the clip of the birth as it happened, as provided by the zoo. Sadly, no audio is made available, but the birth was said to occur around 10:46 p.m. Take a look:
