Photo by michael starghillAfter a few weeks of bad news, Councilmember Michael Brown (I-At Large) could breathe a sigh of relief yesterday on the news that a number of local unions endorsed his bid for re-election.
According to a press release, the Washington Teachers Union, Metropolitan Washington Council AFL-CIO, SEIU Local 722, 32BJ SEIU, the Hotel Association of Washington D.C., District of Columbia Nurses Association, UNITE HERE! Local 25, and the D.C. Hispanic Contractors Association and Laborers Local 657 backed his re-election over that of challengers David Grosso, Mary Brooks Beatty, Leon Swain, Ann Wilcox, and A.J. Cooper.
Still, as the Post’s Mike DeBonis wrote yesterday, it remains to be seen if Brown will be able to turn the tide on what has been a tough re-election campaign, especially with the modest campaign bankroll he has at his disposal after a former staffer allegedly made off with over $113,000 in campaign funds. (The next campaign finance reporting period is in early October.)
Beatty, a Republican, certainly doesn’t seem to want to let him—yesterday she launched a website listing five reasons why Brown should bow out of the race.
