The Portland-by-way-of-New Zealand band Unknown Mortal Orchestra was just in D.C. supporting Liars at the U Street Music Hall, but will return to play 9:30 Club as an opener for Grizzly Bear’s two sold-out shows. The band released its first album last year and is prepping its second release for new label Jagjgauwar for early 2013. While the band has been touring almost non-stop, it found time to write and record some of its follow-up.

Today’s song of the day, “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark),” is the first single from the band’s new album, and while it retains some of UMO’s lo-fi charms, it also steps ahead, relying less on fuzz and more on solid song craft. The band is releasing the track on a limited 7-inch only available on its tour with Grizzly Bear.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra plays Thursday, September 20 and Friday, September 21 with Grizzly Bear at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are sold out.
