How hot are Washington’s professional sports teams right now? Well, look around. The Nationals are playoff-bound with one more win, the Redskins, while 1-1, are basking in the glow of Robert Griffin III and even D.C. United, in spite of losing Dwayne De Rosario for the rest of the year, could hobble into Major League Soccer’s postseason.
Yes, it is a good time to be a sports fan in D.C., so much so, that ESPN The Magazine will be devoting its October 15 issue to our teams and the big stories they’ve generated this year. Griffin’s rise is maybe the best feel-good story in the NFL this season, while no baseball topic seemed as hotly—or, in the case of Tim McCarver, as badly—argued as the Nationals’ decision to end Stephen Strasburg’s season early.
From the description on ESPN’s editorial calendar, here’s what we have to look forward to next month:
D.C. has always been a town where sports is currency, going to a game isn’t just about being a fan, it’s an avenue to power and connections. As the election approaches we will examine the cross-section of these relationships and how they impact sports.
OK, so it’s a little election-y, but still exciting. And just another round of exposure for D.C. to make its case as a great sports town. Griffin made his second Sports Illustrated cover of the year after just one week in the NFL, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him, Strasburg, Bryce Harper, De Rosario or any combination thereof on ESPN’s front page when the issue comes out.
Of course, as D.C. Sports Bog points out, the issue was planned long in advance of D.C.’s hot streak, but it’s always nice when the stars align.
