When Ian Svenonius announced Make-Up would be reuniting for Greg Dulli’s All Tomorrow’s Parties, many D.C. fans asked whether the band would be playing our area anytime soon. While the band did reunite to play a secret show at Comet Ping Pong billed as Garbage Zone, for a while it seemed like we were out of luck. But then by the grace of god, The Make-Up announced its first U.S. show in 12 years will be at the Black Cat tonight, September 20.
Formed out of the ashes of Cupid Car Club and Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up consists of Svenonius, co-conspirator Michelle Mae, James Canty and drummer Steve Gamboa. Not only is The Make-Up back, but its seminal singles collection I Want Some was just reissued on vinyl by M’Lady records.
Today’s song of the day, “We’re Having A Baby,” is a quick number originally from the band’s split with Slant 6 in 1995 but also on I Want Some. The short track is a pretty laid back affair, but Svenonius stretches his voice into that signature gospel yeh-yeh sound. Tickets are still available, so get on it!
The Make-Up plays tonight with Coup Sauvage & The Snips and DJ Kid Congo Powers at the Black Cat. Tickets are $15.
