>> Who wants more gambling in Maryland? The Washington Redskins! WTOP reports that our local football team has placed its chips on the side of those that want to see a luxury casino come to the National Harbor, an issue that will be decided by the state’s voters on November 6. Team officials say that the expansion—which would come to the same county where the Redskins play—would bring additional jobs and economic development to Prince George’s County.

>> The University of the District of Columbia—the city’s only public university—is planning on cutting departments, getting rid of majors and laying off staff in an attempt to slash operating costs, reports the Examiner. UDC pays more per student than most state universities, is less well-regarded and has recently started losing students to a new community college whose accreditation has been threatened by UDC’s financial instability.

>> Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley will ask state regulators to allow electric companies in the state to add a small surcharge to customers’ bills as a means to fund needed infrastructure upgrades, reports the Post. In exchange, the companies would be held to higher reliability standards. Advocates for the rate-payers and some legislators are opposed to the idea, saying that it would reward the utilities for not having completed needed upgrades in the past.
