San Diego act The Soft Pack have been kicking around the scene for a bit, but haven’t truly broken through. The four-piece plays loud and fast rock revival music with jangly guitars and singer’s Matt Lamkin’s slightly deadpan vocals. The band just released Strapped, their second album as the Soft Pack, but third overall, as they were once called The Muslims. Strapped takes the band to a new level by adding more instruments to the mix. Today’s song of the day, “Bobby Brown,” is a laid-back groove that is more R&B than rock. The Strokes-ish track boasts an unironic saxophone solo that actually does justice to the band’s new inspiration.
The Soft Pack plays tonight with Heavy Hawaii and Browns at the Black Cat. Tickets are $15.
