Hold your horses: Mayor Vince Gray isn’t opting out of a second term just yet.
In today’s juicy political conjecturing, WUSA9’s Bruce Johnson tweeted that he had it on good authority that Gray wouldn’t be seeking a second term, regardless what happens with the ongoing federal investigation into the $653,000 shadow campaign that helped get him elected.
But Gray was quick to shoot down those rumors, according to WJLA, calling them “completely ridiculous” and telling Bruce DePuyt via text message: “I am not even halfway through my term at this point. I have had no discussion with anyone about running or not running.” Gray also said that he had “no idea where that came from.”
Johnson said that the news came from an advisor close to the mayor, and that Gray would instead be backing a yet-to-be-named candidate to take over come 2015. Johnson did hedge, though—in a follow-up tweet, Johnson says that Gray hasn’t said anything about a second run, only that a close advisor feels that he won’t run.
The Post’s Mike DeBonis got mayoral spokesman Pedro Ribeiro on the record: “To say it is lightly sourced is a joke. It is unsourced.” The Examiner’s Alan Blinder got this from Ribeiro: “The mayor has made no such decision about whether he will run again.”
