As the District Department of Transportation advised yesterday, traffic around Nationals Park for the next few days is going to be crazy. Street closures and detours abound, and when today’s game lets out, we’ll be in the thick of rush hour. When tomorrow’s game begins, it’ll be the same situation.
Metro is probably the best bet, but even at this hour trains are surely jammed with red-clad fans gearing up their Natitude.
Fortunately, there are a lot of options available for people interested in biking down to Nationals Park during the postseason. And that the weather this afternoon and tomorrow is expected to be quite pleasant makes it that much more enticing.
Bike owners who pedal their way to games already know that Nationals Park is ringed by more than 250 bike racks. Only a few are emblazoned with the “Curly W,” while most are are just perfectly simple staple racks painted in the Nationals’ trademark red hue. Credit the team for knowing its bike-riding fan base would gag at the sight of useless art racks.
Additionally, the team also offers a free valet service for cyclists in parking garage C at the corner of First and N Streets SE.
For people who want to ride a bike down to Navy Yard but don’t have one of their own, Capital Bikeshare will also be out in force during the playoffs. While the Bikeshare station at First and N can handle 23 bikes, DDOT is expecting far more Nationals fans to be arriving on the bulky red three-speeds. A “corral” will be set up next to the Bikeshare station, and DDOT spokesman John Lisle says Bikeshare staff wil be able to handle however many riders show up.
It’s a good day for some baseball, and a bike ride. And if you’ve got tickets and are reading this post right now, what the hell do you think you’re doing? Strap your helmet on and pedal your way over to the stadium!
