>> Baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan is a veteran musician who has worked with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz and Chick Corea. Tonight, he will team up with master arranger Mark Masters at the Atlas to play exquisite interpretations of Duke Ellington’s compositions. 8 p.m. $15-$30.

>> North Indian classical vocalist Samia Mahbub Ahmad performs tonight at the Mansion at Strathmore. In addition to her more traditional music, she will perform works that explore global unity and fusion, drawing from Western and African influences. 7:30 p.m. $13.50-$15.

>> Trumpeter Roy Hargrove continues his week-long stand of 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. $40 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> The Robert Glasper Experiment is one of the most innovative groups working in jazz today. Its blend of electronics, traditional jazz and R&B is giving rise to a wave of imitators. Glasper’s ensemble will pay a visit to The Birchmere on Thursday. 7:30 p.m. $35 + fees.

>> Manner Effect is a group out of Michigan that blends jazz with R&B and pop. They will be at Twins Jazz on Thursday for 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> Soulful pianist Larry Brown will lead his group on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. His band is comprised of first-class local veterans, including saxophonist Peter Fraize, drummer Dominic Smith and trumpeter Thad Wilson. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> “New Music” is a term often associated with contemporary sounds that draw largely from the classical tradition, but which also don’t fit neatly into any one genre (think of D.C.’s own Great Noise Ensemble). The Atlas has launched a New Music series, and on Friday the venue will host the PRISM Saxophone Quartet. The quartet aims to establish the saxophone as a serious concert instrument, while still embracing its history in jazz and pop music. 8 p.m. $15-$25.

>> We previewed the SFJazz Collective the last time they visited the University of Maryland. They will return to the Clarice Smith Center for the Performing Arts on Friday for a concert featuring the works of Chick Corea, as well as new compositions. 8 p.m. $10-$35.

>> A group of talented local musicians will team up at Bohemian Caverns on Friday and Saturday to pay tribute to legendary drummer Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers. 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. $15 in advance/$20 at the door.

>> HR-57 hosts regulars Saltman-Knowles (Friday) and DeAndre Howard (Saturday). 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $15.

>> Ace local drummer Lenny Robinson will lead a quartet at Twins Jazz on Friday and Saturday. The band will include pianist Allyn Johnson and bassist Michael Bowie, also among D.C.’s best, as well as special guest trumpeter Eddie Allen. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. $15 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> When Jason Moran took over as the Kennedy Center‘s Artistic Advisor for Jazz, one of his goals was to find ways to use the venue’s myriad spaces in interesting ways. Thus, the Supersized Jazz Club was born. Located in the Center’s atrium, it features a dance floor, sofas, chairs and open seating. The Supersized Jazz Club’s inaugural event will be an acoustic performance on Saturday from Medeski Martin & Wood. 9:30 p.m. $25 + fees.

>> CapitalBop‘s always excellent D.C. Jazz Loft returns to Montserrat House on Sunday for its October iteration. The stellar lineup includes groups led by trombonist Reginald Cyntje, vocalist Heidi Martin, as well as Kung Fu Bastard, an effort guided by saxophonist Bobby Muncy and guitarist Anthony Pirog. 7 p.m. to midnight. $15 suggested donation.

>> Blue Monday Blues hosts local organist Bill Heid‘s blues band. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> Talented area guitarist Pete Muldoon continues his month long residency of Tuesday night gigs at Bohemian Caverns. 7 and 9 p.m. sets. $10 in advance/$15 at the door.

>> Pianist Bill Mays has had a long association with bassist and local mainstay Tommy Cecil. The two have recorded a series of intimate piano/bass duo albums over the years, and their latest covers works by the great Stephen Sondheim. They will be celebrating the release of Side by Side (Sondheim Duos) on Tuesday at Blues Alley. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $25 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
