People will believe in anything when their beloved sports team is facing elimination, and Nationals fans are no exception.

A few weeks back, Cardinal Bank bought some ad space on the floor of the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro station. But what seemed like an innocent display for the McLean, Va.-based bank turned into a dark omen yesterday when the St. Louis Cardinals clobbered the Nationals 8-0 in Game 3 of the National League Division Series. Now, the Nats are facing elimination, and fans emptying out of the Metro will still have to walk over the visage of a big red bird.

However, Cardinal Bank has no love of the baseball team that shares its name, and in a quick attempt to reverse the bad karma, its ad agency did a quick touch-up on the advertisement. Painted over Cardinal Bank’s logo is a statement reminding people of the company’s true affiliation.

“Let’s go Nats! Stomp the Cardinals!” the ad now reads.

And maybe things will brighten up at nearby Nationals Park.
