As of last night, Columbia Heights nightlife doesn’t end at 2 a.m. The Coupe, a new diner owned and operated by the owner responsible for Tryst, The Diner and Open City, kicked off its 24-hour service after a week-long soft opening with limited hours.

The diner takes after its sister restaurants in many ways, relying on certain classic touches—yes, animal crackers are served with coffee—while adding culinary flourishes you might not find elsewhere. The coffee, for one—you can have Tryst’s usual blend, or pay a little more for a single-pour. Breakfast hasn’t been reinvented, though many staples have been improved; an omelet with serrano ham graces the menu, as does a Tunisian dish featuring eggs layered on top of roasted potatoes. And as the City Paper reported, The Coupe also has bottled cocktails.

The space is also different—sleeker than Tryst’s worn-down living room vibe, long as The Diner is deep and rectangular as Open City is squared. The Coupe occupies the entire ground floor of a building at 11th and Monroe Streets, stretching 75 feet in either direction from the entrance.

But is Columbia Heights ready to go 24/7? Let’s not forget that The Hamilton and Black and Orange both backed away from an all day, all night schedule after realizing that D.C. might stick to an earlier bedtime than folks in other cities. In an interview with The Washingtonian, owner Constantine Stavropoulos said that if The Diner can pull it off in Adams Morgan, then The Coupe can do the same in Columbia Heights:

When we opened the Diner I think there was, like, one pharmacy on Benning Road that was open at 2 AM. Au Pied de Cochon in Georgetown would close on Sunday nights, but that was the closest thing to 24 hours in the heart of Georgetown. But that was it. Now you’ve got 24-hour Giants opening over the place, other grocery stores opening all the time. People’s patterns have changed, I think in part because of the Internet and the way people do business. We’re no longer living a typical 9-to-5 and then eating and going to sleep.

The Coupe is located at 3415 11th Street NW, and it’s open, well, always.
