Uber is taking its sedan-service-by-smartphone business to Charm City. In a job listing issued today, Uber revealed that it is looking for a city operations manager to run things in Baltimore, which appears to be one of the 22-month-old company’s next target markets.

However, the position will be based in the company’s D.C. office, with just 20 percent of the hours spent on the ground in Baltimore. Uber doesn’t have a launch date yet for its Baltimore service, says Rachel Holt, the manager of its D.C. operations. But it is looking to build a network of sedan drivers and build up its brand.

Taxis and other for-hire vehicles in Baltimore are regulated by the Maryland Public Service Commission. Livery sedan companies in Maryland are required to submit their fare schemes for the commissions approval, but the regulations on the books do not appear to prohibit the hiring of vehicles by way of a mobile phone application.

But hiring vehicles via smartphone app is already a common-enough sight in Baltimore. The taxi-hailing program Taxi Magic been in use there since 2009.
