And they’re off!

The 17th Street High Heel Race has happened for 25 years in all type of meteorological conditions, but even the hardiest of two-inch heels won’t likely survive the impact of Hurricane Sandy.

Organizers of the annual pre-Halloween tradition are contemplating calling off tomorrow’s running of the race, saying that Sandy’s arrival to the region may make conditions unsafe. “It has always been rain or shine. The hurricane is a whole new things for us,” said race organizer David Perruzza in an email.

On the event’s Facebook page, opinions were split on whether to host the event as planned or not. “I know these are some tough broads, but are they really going to be able to race in the midst of an epic hurricane?”, asked one person. “Rain or shine! It’s what separates the girly men from the girly boys!”, countered another.

Don’t fret, though—Perruzza says that he’s hoping not to have to cancel the race altogether, but rather push it until after Sandy departs. “If the weather is awful, we are working with the police to change it to Thursday,” he said. That, though, still still depend on whether the Metropolitan Police Department—which closes down 17th Street for the race—will be able to do so after the hurricane comes through.
