We changed our logo when the Nationals made the playoffs, and we’ve done so with D.C. United, which recently clinched its first playoff berth in five years.
United squares off against the New York Red Bulls in a two-game series that starts this Saturday at RFK Stadium. While the higher-seeded United should have gotten the home-field advantage for what could be the second decisive game, both teams and the league decided yesterday to switch the locations of the game due to the lingering effects of Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey. Though the Red Bulls Stadium avoided a direct hit, train service has yet to be restored and concerns were raised of directing resources away from recovery to handling the expected crowds.
Needless to say, we’ve very excited that D.C. United is in post-season play. Not only has our fearless soccer correspondent Pablo Maurer been to just about every game he could physically get himself to—including one in Toronto—but the team has remained firmly dedicated to D.C., even as rumors over a new stadium have come and gone. Though not yet finalized, it’s looking more and more likely that the team will pay for a stadium at Buzzard Point, and the city will kick in for infrastructure upgrades. And when that comes to pass, we bet the team woud even pay for late-night Metro service. (Ahem, Ted Lerner.)
Go United!
