Cimino

Among the many notable political defeats yesterday was a hyperlocal one. In the race for ANC 1A10—a small district between 11th Street and Park Place NW and Columbia and Park Roads NW in the Park View neighborhood—challenger Anthony Cimino defeated longtime commissioner Lenwood Johnson.

Johnson was something of a local character. While he recently got caught calling adult sex lines with his city-funded phone, the longtime commissioner was also known for his surly online attitude, having admitted to owning an unregistered firearm, almost being censured by his fellow commissioners, and berating just about everyone on local listservs.

Well, Johnson’s constituents seemed to have had enough of it, handing Cimino 67 percent of their votes to the incumbent’s 31 percent. Kent Boese, a fellow Park View ANC commissioner, wrote on his blog: “It is expected that the election of Cimino will bring a fair degree of civility back to the Commission and, more importantly, service and representation back to the residents of 1A10.”

As for Johnson, well, this might be for the best for him. He recently admitted to the Post that he doesn’t spend that much time in D.C. anyhow: “I will add this. I’m not very happy there [on Irving Street], so I don’t spend a whole lot of time there except for sleeping there and whatever. I do spend a lot of time in Gaithersburg.”

He’s got plenty more time now.
