Next Thursday’s episode of Parks and Recreation will feature the greatest bit of stunt casting in a very long time. With part of the NBC sitcom’s current season featuring scenes filmed in D.C., the November 15 episode includes a segment in which the endlessly earnest Pawnee, Ind. City Councillor Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) meets her ultimate crush object: Vice President Joe Biden.
Entertainment Weekly lifted the embargo last night on the vice president’s upcoming guest shot. In the episode, Knope and her fiancé Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott), admire the White House, until Ben hints at an “engagement gift.” Given Leslie Knope’s frequently mentioned political and physical admiration for the vice president—”He is my celebrity sex list,” she says in one episode—the scene features many shots of Knope gawking at the newly re-elected Biden.
The scene had to be filmed in the utmost secrecy, though, when Parks and Recreation‘s cast and crew were in D.C. With an election on, all of Biden’s appearances on over-the-air broadcast television were subject to the Federal Communications Commission’s equal-time rule, which stipulates that any stations that show a candidate must offer opportunities for his or her opponent to respond. Parks and Recreation, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, did not film a scene with Republican vice-presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan.
The vice president will hardly be the first real-world politician to appear on Parks and Recreation this year, however. The season premiere featured cameos by Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine).
Biden’s scene was filmed July 19 in a ceremonial meeting room at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next door to the White House, EW reports. And Biden’s comedy timing was reportedly spot-on:
The Veep handled his scene like a pro, even ad-libbing a response to a crazy Leslie retort that wound up in the final cut of the episode. “He was very nice and charming,” reports [executive producer Michael] Schur. “He was clearly a big fan of Amy. It was the day the Emmy nominations came out and when he walked through the door he congratulated her on her Emmy nomination… He said some very nice things about the show and talked about how the pro-public service message was meaningful.”
The full scene won’t appear until next week, but NBC released a short clip of Biden greeting Leslie Knope:
