Odean Pope.>> Area bandleader Doc Scantlin‘s big band, the Imperial Palm Orchestra, specializes in the style of swing that was popular in the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s. The group will be performing at The Carlyle Club on Friday. 8 p.m. $35.
>> Smooth jazz keyboardist Alex Bugnon returns to Blues Alley on Friday to start a three night run of 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $25 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
>> It’s a saxophonist’s weekend at Bohemian Caverns. Odean Pope spent two decades playing with legendary drummer Max Roach. The 74-year old veteran has also released numerous album as a leader over the past 30 years. Pope will lead his group through 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets on Friday. $20 in advance/$25 at the door. On Saturday, Sonny Fortune will visit the historic club with his group. Also in his 70s, Fortune’s huge sound led to stints with drummer Elvin Jones, pianist McCoy Tyner and a host of other greats, in addition to a successful career as a bandleader. Fortune will perform 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. $20 in advance/$25 at the door.
>> HR-57 hosts regulars Antonio Parker (Friday) and the Saltman-Knowles Quartet (Saturday). 9 p.m to 1 a.m. $15.
>> One of the area’s busiest saxophonists, Lyle Link leads a quartet this Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. $15 + $10 food/drink minimum. Link will also complete his month long residency at Bohemian Caverns on Tuesday, performing 7 and 9 p.m. sets. $10 in advance/$15 at the door.
>> There’s no superlative we can use to describe B.B. King that hasn’t been used a thousand times over. The blues legend will take The Howard Theatre‘s stage on Saturday for an 8 p.m. show that features opener Levi Stephens. The Howard is a great room for this type of show, but whether that justifies the $150 ticket is an open question.
>> With the passing of Thanksgiving, it officially becomes Christmas music season. The Capitol Bones, a seventeen piece big band, will play their annual Christmas show on Monday at Blues Alley, featuring holiday arrangements made famous by the great Stan Kenton. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $20 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
