The D.C. Rollergirls—which we cover extensively here at DCist—need a permanent place to practice, and they’re looking for your help to be able to afford it.
“Since the D.C. Rollergirls first strapped their skates on in 2006, we have been fighting for a home. We’ve skated in parking garages, on concrete, at Hains Point dodging cars and at every roller rink and sportsplex between Reston and Rockville. We’re lucky enough to be able to bout at the D.C. Armory, but we can’t afford to also practice there. Without a permanent practice space, we’re unsure of our future as D.C.’s premier Roller Derby league,” writes the league on its Crowdrise page, which it is using to raise the $25,000 it would cost to find a permanent practice space.
The Rollergirls say that with a space to call their own, the league’s six teams will be able to practice consistently, as well as launch a junior league, sponsor recreational games, hold workshops and scrimmages, and lend out the space to community groups that need it.
So far, the D.C. Rollergirls have received over $3,500 of the $25,000 they need; you can donate here, and your donation is fully tax deductible.
