No, you’re not hallucinating. It’s time for a seventh round of DCist Exposed! The images of last year’s marvelous show have barely escaped our memories. Long View Gallery played the gracious and ideal host to two glorious opening nights, enjoyed by patrons partaking in delectable libations as they admired the artwork. Prepare yourselves, people, for similarly delightful times once again.
If you haven’t been down this path with us before, allow us to show you the way. If you’ve been snapping away around the D.C. metro area – whether with your cameraphone, your point & shoot, or your Nikon D800 – you’ve got a month or so to pick your top three shots. Show us our city the way people who live and work here every day see it, and we’ll pick the cream of the crop for our exhibition. Read the rules below for all the details.
Ingeniously built into the space formerly occupied by a car dealership, Long View Gallery boasts 5,000 square feet, affording patrons space to appreciate the works selected from among our contributors. Heather and James will be on hand both opening nights to help you buy the work that takes your fancy.
The opening nights will take place on Wednesday, March 27 and Thursday, March 28, and the show will run through Sunday, April 7. We’ll let you know all the details of the opening night receptions very soon, including ticket information and which particular forms of sustenance will be on offer. Keep checking back here for updates, or on Twitter or Facebook. We even have our very own DCist Exposed website now to help consolidate information about the show.
As always, though, the search for forty or so great photographs to include in our show starts with your submissions. The clock starts now, but don’t delay: your deadline is 11:59pm on Wednesday, January 9, 2013!
DCist Exposed Photography Show Rules
Fill out our quick application form and follow the prompt to PayPal to submit your $10 application fee. We won’t share your info, but we will send you email if there’s a problem with your application or if your photo wins.
Join the DCist Exposed 2013 Flickr group. If you don’t have a Flickr account, please create one well before the contest closes, even if you aren’t ready to submit your images, because Flickr will sometimes limit your posting to groups for several days to a week. You only need a free basic account.
Enter up to 3 photos. Film is fine, but you’ll have to scan them and upload to Flickr.
We will post the winners here and at DCistExposed.com and notify them via email on January 16. Some photographers may have more than one image selected.
CONTEST DEADLINE
You can upload (and substitute) your entries until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2013.
WHAT TO ENTER
The DCist Exposed Photography Show is a celebration of our nation’s capital as seen through the eyes of people who live and work here. Show us your best images of local art, sports, food, culture and street photography and yes, even the occasional monument, but make sure it blows us away! We want to see your amazing, every day Washington, D.C. experiences.
You must live and enter photos taken in the general geographical area. Almost anything you’ve seen in Photo of the Day would be appropriate. You can look at past winners for inspiration.
Regarding when the photo was taken and image altering, our rule is simply this: be reasonable. If your photo is obviously ten years old, it’s unlikely we’ll choose it to represent the city we live in today. Basic contrast and exposure adjustments are fine, but if it’s obviously photoshopped to some place outside of reality (text, extreme filters, gratuitous use of HDR, etc.), it’s very unlikely we’ll choose it.
IF YOUR IMAGE WINS
You’ll be asked to participate in our annual gallery show at Long View Gallery.
You give DCist and Ten Miles Square permission to reproduce your image on DCist and in the exhibition catalog.
PARTICIPATING IN THE GALLERY EXHIBIT
Winning photographers will get to display their image in a real art gallery exhibit!
We require standardization for the exhibit. Your image should be printed no larger than 8×10 (or a similar size if it’s irregular) and matted and framed according to our set standards:
– Black metal moulding 16×20 or smaller frame with regular glass
– White acid free mat
– White acid free foam core backing
We know most of you have never had your work professionally framed before, but we want your work to look its best, so no homemade jobs unless you’ve got some experience doing this. Most framing stores can charge a significant amount and take quite a bit of time to frame your work. Most Exposed winners have used Apex Glass & Moulding because they know our specs and do their framing faster and cheaper than any other store. We can also arrange a special deal for framing with Long View Gallery if requested.
You can offer your print for sale in the exhibit. If you’ve never sold a photograph, we’ll advise you on pricing and other questions.
To help us pay for the event, DCist keeps 30 percent of all sales from the exhibit.
You’ll have 9 weeks to print, mat and frame your photograph. During the week before the opening reception, you’ll need to deliver your photograph to Long View Gallery.
Bring your family and friends to the opening receptions at Long View Gallery on March 27 and 28 to celebrate all the winners, spy on gallery-goers as they gush over your work, and maybe buy a photo yourself! The exhibit will close on Sunday, April 7.
